ESL Academic Bridge Program

For Students Conditionally-Admitted to the University of Colorado Boulder

Overview

The ESL Academic Bridge Program is for conditionally-admitted students who have not met the English language proficiency requirements for admission into an undergraduate degree program at the University of Colorado Boulder. Students who choose to enroll in the ESL Academic Bridge Program must successfully complete the program prior to beginning their degree program at the university.

What is the ESL Academic Bridge Program?

The ESL Academic Bridge Program prepares students to meet the English language challenges of undergraduate study at the University of Colorado Boulder. Students not only take coursework in academic English, but also participate in workshops, activities, and events, which help them transition to the university, and become part of the university community.

When can I begin my undergraduate degree studies?

Students generally take 6 months to 1 year to complete the ESL Academic Bridge Program. At the beginning of the program, students will take a placement test to determine their level placement. There are 8 levels in the program. To meet the English language proficiency requirements and be allowed to start a degree program, students must complete the highest level at the IEC (Advanced 2), with a total GPA of 3.0, and a final grade of B- or higher for their final session.

How much does the ESL Academic Bridge Program cost?

Please see our Tuition page for updated tuition and fees.

How do I apply for the ESL Academic Bridge Program?

The first step is to complete the application for admission to the IEC. The IEC application can be found here. Students admitted to the ESL Academic Bridge Program do not need to pay the IEC’s $100 application processing fee.

When should I apply to the ESL Academic Bridge Program?

We encourage students to apply as soon as possible so there is enough time for the IEC to send them their immigration document (I-20) and for students to apply for and obtain an F-1 student visa.

What are my housing options?

Students in the ESL Academic Bridge Program are required to live in a residence hall on campus for two semesters. This is an excellent opportunity to make friends with students who have already begun a degree program, and to participate in residential life programs and activities on main campus.

Can I leave the ESL Academic Bridge Program early by submitting a new TOEFL or IELTS score?

ESL Academic Bridge Program students cannot leave the program early by submitting new TOEFL or IELTS scores. ESL Academic Bridge Program students must complete the program in order to enter their undergraduate degree program. TOEFL and IELTS scores are no longer accepted by the University once a student enrolls in the ESL Academic Bridge Program.
